About the SNO
The RAMSES service (or SNO RAMSES 1 ) is a structure sponsored by CNRS to support the development and use of the RAMSES code by the international astrophysics community. It has been officially created in July 2023 and initially relies on the commitment of 6 institutes in France, represented by J. Blaizot (Lyon, coordinator), Y. Dubois (Paris), M. González (Saclay), A. Le Brun (Meudon), P. Ocvirk (Strasbourg), and S. Peirani (Nice), with the support of an Advisory Committee composed of J. Devriendt (Oxford), T. Haugbølle (Copenhagen), R. Teyssier (Princeton), and S. Yi (Seoul).
There are three main types of actions that the service will undertake: (1) animating the community, (2) supporting users and developers, and (3) preparing for the next generation of codes.
Animation of the community – This includes the development of this website to collect and share information within the community, support for the organisation of RAMSES user meetings (RUMs), general communication, the organisation of master classes, schools, etc.
The reference version – One of the core activities of the RAMSES service is to define a reference version of the code, to maintain it, and to make it evolve each year by importing the most important developments from the international community. This reference version will be stable enough to be documented in detail, and will serve as a basis for the development of training courses and tutorials for new users and developers. Although slightly behind the latest developments, this reference version will enable the community to produce original simulations at the cutting edge of international competition in a number of astrophysical fields. It will also be used to train new developers.
The next generation of codes – Exascale platforms are coming together, and the portability and scalability of RAMSES are becoming an issue. Several initiatives are underway to develop new AMR prototypes for exascale supercomputers. The service is monitoring these and will support a coordinated effort by the RAMSES community should a successful prototype emerge.
- In French, the RAMSES Service is called the “SNO RAMSES“, where SNO stands for “Service National d’Observation”. SNO’s are structures created by CNRS to support the development and use of classical astronomical instruments. Since 2023, these structures can also support community codes. ↩︎
Working Groups
A working group (WG) is formed temporarily to gather people willing to work on a well-defined (sub-)task of the RAMSES Service. The executive board creates (and terminates) WGs in order to implement the different features of the Service in a coordinated fashion. Anyone interested in participating in a WG is welcome to do so and should register by sending an email to the WG coordinator. WGs report on their progress every 3 months and meet at least once a month. The WG coordinator is in charge of organizing the WG meetings and of reporting on the progress of the WG to the executive board.
Members of the RAMSES community who wish to propose a new WG should send an email to the SNO coordinator (currently J. Blaizot) who will discuss the idea with the board.
The list of active working groups can be found at this link. This list points to all documents produced by each group.
Miscellaneous documents
Some of the documents produced by the SNO RAMSES may be useful for reference (e.g. the initial proposal, presentations, progress reports, etc.). These documents can be found at this link.
